<> short background <>

Rebekah Danae Grey was born on May 23, 1982 to loving, middle-class parents in Birmingham, Alabama. While her parents weren't overly religious, she was raised with a background of Sunday School in a small Baptist Church. Her childhood was relatively normal until the year she turned six, when she was abducted from her front yard by a stranger.

Four days later she was found wandering down a street without a stich of clothing on, her body black and blue, and with no memory of what had happened to her previously, not even of her mother and father. Physical examination revealed that the six year old had been sexually molested, beaten, and raped. The physical injuries to her was so great that the doctors feared for a time that she wouldn't make it. Her kidnapper was never caught, and to this day the vague memories that have surfaced and the fear they bring haunt her dreams and nightmares. After the abduction, the sweet, impulsive, and happy child that Beka had been disappeared, replaced by a ghostly shell of a child who was terrified of being locked in to the point where she would go into catatonic fits at having her door shut. She would wake up screaming in terror at least once every few days. She also developed a terror of knives, presumably from something that was done to her while she was held captive.

Faced with this shell of their child, her mother and father were unable to cope and eventually divorced, with her mother gaining custody. As Rebekah grew older, she rebelled. She began to take drugs and drink heavily. After passing out one night at a party, she was raped again, this time by an aquantance. The rape resulted in pregnancy.

At 14, Beka walked into an abortion clinic and ended the life of her baby. Her downward spiral took a virtual nosedive in the years following. By the time she was 16, she had hit rock bottom. One night, she slit her wrists, hoping to end the pain of her tormented soul. As she began to black out from loss of blood, she suddenly realized that she didn't want to die...she was scared of the other side. She cried out to God to rescue her. At that moment her mother walked into her room, saw her lying in the pool of blood and rushed her to the hospital. Rebekah, ever the survivor, lived.

After being held for psych evaluations for several days, she was released from the hospital. That night, Beka took to the streets once more, but this time, she wasn't looking for drugs. She was searching for God. She stumbled into the youth service of Radiant Life Assemblies of God church, and finally, finally Rebekah met a Savior who loved her, would never leave her, and never, ever forsake her. In June of 1996, she was baptized in a pool at an apartment complex, and soon after was baptized in the Holy Spirit as well. Beka felt that God was calling her to go into the ministry, and so she became involved in outreaches and crusades. Blessed with a beautiful voice that somehow survived the drug abuse, she became involved in the music ministry of her youth group. She soon became a well-known figure in her area and even traveled to other cities to sing in churches and at youth rallies. This past May, she graduated with honors from her high school and accepted a scholarship from Emory University to study Vocal Performance.

Though her life has been irrevocably changed by her encounter with Christ, Beka is still haunted by her past. She absolutely cannot stand to be locked into a room, and has been known to go into a catatonic state when forcibly kept in enclosed spaces. In addition, nighmares from her vague recollections of the time during her kidnapping wake her screaming at least once a week. She still does not remember any of her childhood before the abduction. She hesitates to tell anyone about what happened to her, still feeling a deep shame for it and fearing pity. The more she looks at it, though, the more she begins to see that God has a purpose in all of this...and though she went through hell and back, she knows God will use this all to his glory, as He already has.
